After getting a degree in Physics in 1998 at Salamanca University in Spain, Juan moved to the UK to specialise in Acoustics Engineering. In 2000 Juan took a position as a researcher at Southampton University. Looking for a “thinking person’s” martial art that emphasised self defence, he found Shōrinji Kenpō. Ignoring all competition, he immediately joined the University club. In the years that followed he rose through the ranks and took on many club committee responsibilities, including club treasurer, secretary and captain. He is now a deputy branch manager, and a 2nd Dan.
Juan enjoys everything about Shōrinji Kenpō, especially teaching it. Still living in Southampton (Kenpō being a good reason for staying), he now spends his free time working at Southampton Solent University as a senior lecturer.
